Every capsule factory produces shells that never reach a medicine bottle: trimmed edges, dented or mis-printed capsules, and whole batches that miss a colour or weight specification. This material is called gelatin capsule scrap, and instead of going to landfill it is collected, graded and sold as a raw material to other industries.
Gelatin capsule scrap is clean, rejected capsule-shell material from pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturing. It comes as hard gelatin scrap (from two-piece capsules), soft gelatin scrap (from softgels) and pulverised scrap (ground into powder). Because it is still mostly gelatin, it is reused in industrial applications. It is not reused for medicines.
Where does capsule scrap come from?
Gelatin capsules are made on high-speed machines and every shell is checked. Material is rejected at several points:
- Trimming waste – the excess edges cut from cap and body during forming.
- Visual and dimensional rejects – dents, bubbles, double caps, short bodies or uneven walls found during sorting.
- Printing rejects – smudged, faint or misaligned printing.
- Off-specification lots – batches with the wrong shade, weight or moisture level.
- Softgel line waste – the gelatin ribbon left over after the softgels are cut out, plus rejected softgels.
Types of gelatin capsule scrap
Hard gelatin scrap
Rejected empty hard capsules and trimmings. Usually sold as whole shells or as crushed “capsule crush”, sorted by colour where buyers need it.
Hard gelatin scrap →Soft gelatin scrap
Gelatin ribbon and rejected softgels, also called “softgel crush”. It contains glycerin or sorbitol from the softgel recipe, which buyers consider when processing it.
Soft gelatin scrap →Pulverised scrap
Hard gelatin scrap ground into granules or powder. It is easier to dissolve, dose and transport in bulk.
All products →What is gelatin capsule scrap used for?
Gelatin is a protein that dissolves in warm water, forms films and binds other materials. Recovered capsule gelatin is therefore bought by industries that need those properties and do not require pharmaceutical-grade material. Typical outlets include:
- binders and adhesives, for example in match-head and paper or board applications;
- animal and aquaculture feed, where gelatin acts as a protein source or binder (subject to local feed regulations);
- general industrial processing where a gelatin solution is used as a film former or binder.
The right use depends on the grade, the colourants and the buyer’s specification, so serious buyers ask for a sample and a description of the source before ordering.
How to judge the quality of capsule scrap
| Check | What good scrap looks like |
|---|---|
| Purity | Only capsule-shell material: no plastic, paper, dust or metal. |
| Dryness | Free-flowing pieces, not sticky or clumped; no musty smell. |
| Fill residue | Empty-capsule scrap should contain no powder or medicine. |
| Colour sorting | Single-colour lots fetch better prices than mixed colours. |
| Packing | Sealed, labelled bags so the lot stays dry in transit. |
Why recycling capsule scrap matters
A single capsule line can generate several tonnes of rejected shells a year. Selling that material keeps a useful protein out of landfill, gives manufacturers a return on waste they would otherwise pay to dispose of, and supplies other industries with a consistent, affordable raw material.
Frequently asked questions
Is capsule scrap the same as edible gelatin?
No. It started as pharmaceutical-grade gelatin, but once it has been rejected and handled as scrap it is traded as an industrial raw material, not as food or pharmaceutical gelatin.
What is the difference between hard and soft gelatin scrap?
Hard gelatin scrap comes from two-piece empty capsules and is mostly gelatin with colourants. Soft gelatin scrap comes from softgels and also contains plasticisers such as glycerin, which makes it softer and changes how it is processed.
Can I buy a single colour?
Often, yes. Colour-sorted lots depend on what the factories are producing at the time, so ask your supplier about current availability.
